Do I need to convert in front of witnesses to become a Muslim?
I have heard from a Muslim brother that I need to convert in front of some other Muslim who then acts as a witness of my adoption of faith on day of judgment.
It says on the Wikipedia page for shahada:
Recitation of the shahada in front of witnesses is also the first and only formal step in conversion to Islam.
Is it true?
